in the rain we drove over a turtle by mistake

In the rain we drove over a turtle by mistake
He knew it before I heard the crack of its armored back
Tragic & certain, he checked anyways.

It was one of those mornings where nothing goes the intended way.

After the rain the turtle’s guts spilled out into the road
The bees were buzzing, so I walked away
He shoveled the tiny being into the woods,

One swift motion, and it was done.
